Mary Oliver rođena je 1935. u Maple Heightsu, u državi Ohio. Kao tinejdžerica provela je kratko vrijeme u domu Edne St. Vincent Millay u Austerlitzu, New York, gdje je njezinoj obitelji pomagala u sređivanju rukopisa koje je ta slavna pjesnikinja ostavila za sobom. U pedesetim godinama dvadesetog stoljeća studirala je na Sveučilištu Ohio i Fakultetu Vassar, ali nikada nije diplomirala. Napisala je više od petnaest zbirki eseja i poezije te je za svoj rad dobila nekoliko nagrada i priznanja. Njezine najpoznatije zbirke poezije su Nove i odabrane pjesme, za koju je dobila prestižnu National Book Award, House of Light (Kuća svjetla), nagrađenu s Christopher Award te American Primitive (Američki divljak), za koju joj je dodijeljena Pulitzerova nagrada. Više od četrdeset godina živjela je u Massachusettsu sa svojom partnericom Molly Malone Cook, a nakon njezine smrti preselila se na jugoistočnu obalu Floride. Umrla je 2019. godine.
